Relay Newsletter - May 2025

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

I would like to acknowledge that April 28th was our National Day of Mourning. This is an important and solemn day for our industry, and a stark reminder that we work in a dangerous industry. Slips, trips and falls are listed as the largest issue; however, many believe that respiratory illness is not reported properly as it is not immediately apparent, and that it is most likely the major issue. The ESC group reports that: “More deaths were caused by occupational diseases than by injuries”. This underscores the importance of addressing long term health concerns associated with construction work, such as exposure to hazardous materials. It is important to make sure you are wearing properly fitted Personal Protective Equipment and always be vigilant about the hazards present at your workplace for you and your fellow Brothers and Sisters, to ensure that everyone returns home safe and sound to family and loved ones.

Every day our membership goes out and represents the IBEW by demonstrating a dedication to quality work. We are all ambassadors of the Union, and to that end I would like to thank you all for those conversations that you’ve had with the non-union workers. The organizers have made inroads with several shops due to the conversations that were being held between our members and the non-union. Whether it was at a job site, trade school or the local hockey rink. It is important to dispel the myths and highlight the advantages of being represented by the IBEW. We accomplish so much more as a team, and it is our greatest advantage to organizing.

For those of you that would like to plan for your retirement the Trustees are hosting an information session with Ellement consulting Monday June 9th at 7pm, at the Nepean Sportsplex Hall A. All members and spouses or family members are welcome to attend. Ellement will be explaining the tiers of retirement and what you need to do to prepare for your retirement.

Fraternally,

Brother Braydon Potter/Business Manager/Financial Secretary

Fraternellement,
Confrère Braydon Potter/Gestionnaire d’affaires/Secrétaire financier
