Relay Newsletter - September 2024
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
Happy September! As summer comes to an end, the Electrical Work Industry remains steady and there are many large projects on the horizon. With the hard work of our Members and showing your professionalism on job sites every day, I know we will demonstrate our strong work ethic to ensure our contractors success which then becomes our success. So, a win-win for everyone! Because of this, I believe we are in a unique time to capture a larger market share within the electrical industry. I ask all our Brothers and Sisters to speak with any non-union electrical workers you may know so that they can reach out to our organizing staff: James Sheppard or Rich Bowie. Your help in explaining the benefits of becoming an IBEW member to an unorganized electrician would be a huge asset. Our Membership Development team are talking to open shops and unorganized workers everyday but the best organizers we have are the rank-and-file members who are able to share their experiences and advantages that come with being apart of our organization. To assist with this, we are offering a course developed by our International Office called COMET. This course is intended to give the tools and guidance needed to our general membership to become effective organizers on job sites and out in public. If you are interested in this course, please call the hall to register.
There are a lot of jobs now and in the future that require security clearances. To ensure we can staff those jobs, and you don’t miss the opportunity to be able to bid on these types of jobs please check that you have the proper security clearance and that it is still valid. Most places are now requiring Secret Clearance. Contact the Hall to speak to John Harrison or Heather Bowie to check your current clearance or to start the security process. Be proactive as this process takes some time to complete and to be granted clearance.
Fraternally,
Brother Braydon Potter/Business Manager/Financial Secretary
Fraternellement,
Confrère Braydon Potter/gérant d’affaires/secrétaire financier

EDUCATION
WHMIS UPDATE can be completed online. Please contact the hall for further information.
Education Tuition /Textbook Loan Program
With a new curriculum starting this fall and trade school changing over from 3 terms to 4 terms, there will also be some changes to the tuition reimbursements and books here at local 586.
Traditionally we provided all new 309A apprentices with some discounted textbooks, but other required textbooks had to be purchased by the apprentices each term. We also reimbursed a percentage of the tuition costs to those 309A apprentices who passed our night courses and got good grades in trade school.
As of September 2024
All 309A apprentices still on the old 3-term system (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced) will still be eligible for the tuition exemption if they passed the required night school courses.
All 309A apprentices on the new 4-term system will not be eligible for a tuition reimbursement. Instead, they will be provided with a free code book when they take the first night school course (EC-1) and the training Centre will loan them all the textbooks they require for trade school. This will ensure that our apprentices will not have to put out any extra money for code/textbooks, and their textbooks will always be the newest edition as our required textbooks change frequently.
For 631A apprentices, all required code/textbooks will be loaned to apprentices attending trade school.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause throughout the transition to the new system. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
